MARY KATRANTZOU
London-based designer Mary Katrantzou epitomizes the idea of fashion as art in her latest Spring/Summer 2012 collection, shown this past fall at London Fashion Week. Her brilliant fusion of the bold, and the abstract characterizes the theme of her brand and past collections, and this season proved to be no different.
With a mother who worked as an interior designer and a father who professionally trained in textile design, Mary Katrantzou grew up with abundant artistic influences. After a brief stint in architecture studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, she transferred to the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design to further her art studies. During her time there, Katrantzou honed her print design technique and even sold a few of her prints to Bill Blass.
Since the completion of her academic career, she has received ample recognition for her initial collections, which all feature a distinct architectural theme in their construction. Katrantzou has become known for her abstract graphics and flawless execution in technical design. In 2010, she succeeded Alexander Wang in receiving the coveted Swiss Textiles Award, as well as numerous others from reputable industry organizations.
A peek at photos highlighting her prints, taken backstage at her S/S ’12 show:
